Study – The World-Wide Picture

The World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS)

Girl Scouts of the USA is part of an international sisterhood. You could travel tomorrow to more than 140 countries around the globe and be recognized as a Girl Scout simply by wearing your World Association pin.

Member organizations offer informal learning opportunities and challenges to help girls and young women develop into responsible young leaders. Members are encouraged to visit each other and learn about life and culture in other countries.

The World Association Pin has a blue background to symbolize the sky over our sisterhood. In gold, for the sun, are three leaves. Each leaf stands for a part of our promise. The leaves rest on a "stem" that is a flame; the flame of friendship.

Inside two leaves are stars, representing the Promise and Law. In the very center there is a compass needle, pointing girls in the right direction.

As well as the pin, all 8.5 million sisters in WAGGGS have these things in common:

  • A 3-part promise, to serve, to help, and to obey our law. The wording varies from country to country, but the meaning is the same.
  • A 3-fingered sign representing the parts of the promise,
  • A left-hand shake, while making the three-fingered sign with the right hand
  • The motto: Be Prepared
  • Celebrating Thinking Day on February 22 (This is the birthday of Lord Baden Powell, the founder of the scouting movement, and of his wife, Olave) Thinking Day is an opportunity to "think" about our international sisters and learn about Girl Scouting or Guiding in other countries
  • Ownership of 4 international centers:

Juliette Low realized the value and strength that comes from an international sisterhood. The Juliette Low World Friendship Fund was established in her memory. Each year American Girl Scouts make donations to the fund, frequently in an unusual manner. Troops may decide to contribute a dime for every letter in a girl's first name, or a penny for each inch in height, or other equally fun methods. The JLWFF helps support the needs of new-member countries and the four world centers.
